The artist's wife. (Bellows) / "Girl Sewing" is a study of Emma Bellows. In this composition, as well as in "The Plaid Shawl" (M. 140), and "Girl Fixing Her Hair" (M. 184), Emma is the patient model, rather than the elegant personalized subject of some of the other portraits. (Mason)
