New York -- Miss Donna M. Waugh, 22, of New York City, receives the U.S. Treasury's Gold Lifesaving medal at the Coast Guard's Governors Island Base in New York today. Adm. Richard M. Ross makes the presentation. Miss Waugh pulled her escort, Ensign John W. Gibson, a navy frogman, from the water near the Virgin Islands last April after he was attacked by sharks. Ensign Gibson died before he could receive medical help. The medal is the nations highest lifesaving award.

Michigan Cities Suffer from Prolonged Dry Spell. Inkster, Mich. -- Michigan farmers have been particularly hard hit by the recent dry period and in many sections cattle and crops have suffered heavily. In Dearborn and Inkster the fire departments have come to the rescue of those people whose wells are dry due to the continued drought. Hose lines were laid to the dry wells and the work of filling then begun. In the picture children are shown tapping fire hydrants which have been left open for that purpose.
