Feeling Millionths of an Inch. An apparatus which permits engineers to feel a difference in the length of metal blocks of two millionths of an inch, was demonstrated October 21 by C.E. Johansson (above) of the Ford Motor Company, before a national conference of gauging and measurement experts at the headquarters of the American Standards Association in New York. The conference was called to bring about international uniformity in the industrial use of the units of length -- the inch and the millimeter.
