When they went to Nigeria dr. Virgil Payne, 71, and his wife, Dorothy, 68, were the oldest couple in the peace corps. both teach at the federal advanced teachers college in the Nigerian capital of Lagos. here Mrs. Payne, a math teacher, pursues the answer to a problem with three of her students. the Paynes come from little silver, N.J. more than half of the volunteers throughout the world are involved in education activity. the peace corps, which marks its fifth anniversary this spring, counts some 10,200 volunteers like the Paynes at work in 46 countries in Africa, Latin America and Asia and 1,500 in training.
