Farmers Return to Old Oaken Bucket as Drought Drains Wells. Farmers in nearby Maryland have been forced to return to the primitive method of dipping water from their wells with a bucket suspended from a rope, because of the water having sunk so low due to the continued drought that the pumps are no longer able to raise it.
