James Dale Manier, 34, serving a life sentence for the murder of his wife in 1970 was to be executed, but a U.S. supreme court ruling on the death penalty saved his life. Manier holds a parakeet with a broken wing; he is nursing the bird back to health. "I want to do something meaningful with my life," he says. Manier is law librarian at the Colorado State Penitentiary and sought out by inmates wanting legal advice.
