Gar Wood Designing World's Largest Ditcher. The largest ditching machine in the world, capable of digging a ditch 15 feet wide and 30 feet deep, is now being designed by Gar Wood Industries, Wayne, Mich., according to an announcement today by E. B. Hill, vice-president, sales. The new giant ditcher, Gar Wood Buckeye Model 435, will be used to excavate intercepting and outfall sewer trenches, water diversion aqueducts and other large ditches. It will sell for about $100,000, approximately 50% less than the cost of conventional excavating equipment now used for this ditching work. Overall approximate dimensions of the new ditcher are: Length, 81 feet; height, 15 feet; width, 12 feet, excluding the dirt discharge conveyor. Its estimated weight will be 65 tons. The big ditcher will be built at Gar Wood's plant in Findlay, Ohio. The machine will be crawler mounted at the digging end and supported by rubber tired wheels in front. Two diesel engines with torque converters will supply power to the crawlers and the digging drive. Hydraulic power steering will be another feature. The biggest ditchers in productions today, the Gar Wood Buckeye Model 51 pipeline ditcher, and the 160 sewer ditcher will be dwarfed by the new Buckeye 435. Model 160 is a ladder-type ditcher which will dig 16 feet deep and up to 4 feet wide. Model 51, a wheel-type ditcher, digs up to 8'-6" deep and 4'-2" wide, and will excavate enough dirt in an 8 hour day to fill 100 gondola freight cars. The Buckeye 51 has dug ditch for most of the major pipelines in the U. S. and throughout the world.
