Shirley Jackson 27 (above) the first black woman to earn a doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology says the major problem faced by black students in general and by the black female student in particular is the lack of role models. "One reason it's so rare to find a black Ph.D., especially in a technical field such as physics, is because there are no role models," Dr. Jackson said.
