Earl Sande, considered one of the greatest jockeys of his time and now the successful trainer of Col. Maxwell Howard's racing string, is shown talking over with The Chief, one of Howard's two great 3-year-olds, after detraining at Narragansett Park yesterday. The Chief and Stagehand checked in yesterday for the $10,000 Thornton Memorial 'Cap on Saturday and for the $25,000 Gansett Special to be run a week later. The Chief is best known for his wins in the Brooklyn and Dwyer Handicaps in New York this year; Stagehand for his win over Seabiscuit in the Santa Anita Handicap. Both are 3-year-olds. Sande has been in New England before but not since he became a big time trainer.
