The pose is melodramatic and artificial. This is supposed to have been an illustration for an article in which case histories of alcoholics were described in an attempt to gain support for the prohibition amendment. The exact title or date of the article is unknown. Because of the unnaturally stilted positioning that forces the figures into a triangular design, this print is frequently cited as a prime example of Bellows' fascination with the artistic theory of Dynamic Symmetry, and his application of the theory.
