Fantin-Latour, Henri, 1836-1904 · 1893
The traditional group of the Pietà is seen on the left, at the foot of the cross. The Virgin, wearing a veil, supports her son with her right hand and presses her cheek to his head which is hidden in shadow. In the middle, Mary Magdalene, seen with loose hair, approaches and lifts the limp hand of the Crucified One. On the right are two flying angels. The nearest one veils its eyes with its right hand. The other, devastated, goes back to heaven.
