Bellows, George, 1882-1925 · 1923–1924
Another treatment of the Dempsey-Firpo championship fight held at night, Polo Grounds, New York. (Bellows) / This second version of the Dempsey-Firpo championship fight is a reduced and simplified composition. The confusion of ropes on the left side is partially eliminated, and the figure on the right side is somewhat cut off. The artist was commissioned by the New York "Evening Journal" to make a drawing of the fight...One of Bellows' final paintings was "Dempsey and Firpo"...based on the drawing and lithographs of what the artist considered to have been the most exciting and dramatic fight of his experience.
