Vallie Bates, 11 years old, whose 37-year-old cousin, Harry Bates, is said by state police to have confessed to her slaying. The girl's nude body, throat slashed, was found in a burlap sack at the bottom of an abandoned mine shaft. According to the alleged confession, Bates hit the girl with a heavy shoe to silence her screams when he attempted to attack her.
