Dr. Denton A. Cooley (L) holds a photograph of the Orthotopic Cardiac Prosthesis in front of the chest of Dr. Domingo Liotta following the first total replacement of a human heart by a mechanical device into Haskell Karp of Skokie, Ill. 4/4 at Houston. The device used today was worked out from an original device developed by Dr. Liotta in 1959 in his native Argentina.
