Couple who defied police for 12 hours

Manuel miller, 47, an otherwise mild-mannered justice of the peace, stands armed with a rifle beside his wife, Lucille, 44, in the front doorway of their home, defying authorities to take his wife away. This was the opening scene of a siege lasting more than 12 hours, during which miller threatened to shoot it out with police if they invaded their home. The trouble started when three U.S. marshals went to the miller home to take Mrs. miller to a mental hospital. Miller ordered them out at the point of a gun. His wife is under an 18-count indictment, charged with trying to influence young men to evade the selective service law. A tear gas barrage under cover of darkness ended the millers' defiance of federal and state authorities.
