A mixed jury, after deliberating five hours and 25 minutes, doomed three co-defendants to death in the gas chamber today, for the brutal strangulation murder of Mrs. Mabel Monahan, wealthy Burbank, calif., widow. no recommendation of leniency was made by the jury of nine men and three women, who brought in a verdict of guilty for the trio. these two photos show the defendants in the California superior court, after the verdict was pronounced. photo left: Barbara graham, 29, tearfully lowered her head as she heard verdict. photo right: co-defendants Emmett Perkins, left, and jack santo, are shown grim-faced and emotionless, as they left the court after being convicted of first degree murder. santo was described by the authorities as the leader of the California "murder mob." Perkins was termed the triggerman. motive for their crime was robbery.
