Doomed Algerian girl hopes for French clemency

People from many parts of the world, including United Nations Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold and Soviet Premier Bulganin, have appealed for clemency for Jamila Bouhired (above), Algerian girl sentenced to death as a terrorist nine months ago by a French military tribunal in Algiers. The girl denied involvement in the bombing of which she accused but admitted her membership in the F.L.N. (rebel organization). Up to now, no woman has been executed for rebel activities, but four others besides Jamila are under a death sentence. Sympathizers hope that French President Rene Coty will grant clemency.
