Cutting the Heart Out of Winter -- The towboat St. Louis is breaking a path through 14-inch thick ice on the Mississippi river en route to St. Paul. The craft is shown as it backed up, preparatory to ramming heavy ice in its path. The picture was taken yesterday as the towboat, pushing a coal barge, worked in Lake Pepin, an enlargement of the Mississippi about 50 miles southeast of St. Paul. The St. Louis is expected in St. Paul over the week end to open the upper Mississippi navigation season.
