Consoled by Cooking. In the United States, one of every four marriages end in divorce, a total of some one-half million homes coming apart. To the male, who is expected to provide financial comfort in the form of alimony and child support payments, this means a sudden drop in living conditions. Gone is the home to return to, the clothes cleaned and ironed, the meals ready and the children waiting. Instead, as depicted in this photograph, he could be confronted with a do-it-yourself hot-plate, cramped living quarters and an emptiness that reminds him daily he is alone.
