Diamond-Making Machine--This is the huge 1,000-ton press used in the General Electric Research Laboratory in the successful experiment to produce diamonds from carbonaceous material. The diamonds, which GE says are the first man-made substance hard enough to scratch other diamonds, were made under pressures greater than 1,500,000 pounds per square inch and at temperatures above 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit.
