A Desert Farmer Turns on the "Rain" for His Crops. In the desert where farming depends on irrigation a simple sprinkling is not enough. The natural rainfall here on the Salt River federal reclamation project in Arizona in the average year is sufficient to keep crops alive for only one month, so that the canal must do the work for the other eleven. This farmer is opening the head gate to divert a stream into the lateral canal which leads into his fields.
