Chimbote, Peru: Residents of this small fishing village, 260 miles north of Lima, stand near smashed vehicle 6/2 following the worst earthquake to strike this nation in this century. Officials 6/3 estimated that as many as 30,000 persons may have been killed in the quake, 5/31, and by subsequent floods that ravaged northern Peru from the desert coast to the Amazon jungle.
