The chief negotiators for the United Steelworkers of America (USW) and 11 major steel companies said 7/27 they were unable to reach a "basis for settlement" of their wage contract dispute. I.W. Abel (top, 1964 filer), USW president, and R. Conrad Cooper (bottom, 1965 filer), chief negotiator for the companies, said in a joint statement they would meet during the weekend in an effort to reach agreement on a new wage contract and avert a threatened strike of 400,000 steelworkers at midnight 7/31.
