Eduard Wiiralt (1898–1954) was a virtuoso in Estonian art history; his mercilessly refined style and technical skill resembling that of much-admired old masters resulted in the depictions of the darkest aspects and fears of human nature and the hellishness of social oppression. Wiiralt’s unique oeuvre was on display in many exhibitions of European prints in the 1930s and achieved international recognition.
