Carless Lifeboat Tested in N.Y. Harbor Officials of the U. S. Bureau of Navigation were present aboard the S. S. Monarch of Bermuda in New York harbor, Feb. 21, to watch tests of an carless lifeboat -- operated by a system of levers geared to a central drive shaft, which turns a propellor. This type of lifeboat was used in rescuing a number of passengers when the S. S. Morrow Castle went down, and the Monarch of Bermuda went to the rescue.
