Carl van Bates, 50, an Amarillo, Texas, shoe store owner who received a new heart 8/19/68, has written former President Dwight D. Eisenhower to wish him a successful battle against his multiple heart problems. Bates, who wrote the letter on behalf of Houston's seven adult transplant recipients, said he felt "so near normal and good" on the 4th ay after his transplant that he wanted to tell the former chief executive about the transplant program.
