Cap of Liberty, near view. At the base of the principal terrace is a large area covered with shallow pools, where some of the ornamentations are perfect, while others are fast going to decay, leaving the decomposed sediment as white as snow. On this sub-terrace is a remarkable cone about fifty feet in height, and twenty feet broad at the base, its form suggesting the name of the Liberty Cap. It is undoubtedly the remains of an extinct geyser. (Jackson, 1875)
