The Old Tolbooth gaol, Edinburgh, at the north-west corner of St. Giles', was ' the Heart of Midlothian, a place old in story and namefather to a noble book.' The Canongate Tolbooth or Court-house, temp. James VI., shown in the etching, has over an archway the inscription ' Patria; et Posteris, 1591.' Standing figure in doorway and seated figure.
