Chamber Used to Save Squalus Men. Portsmouth, N.H.- Here is a cross-section of the diving bell, or rescue chamber, which was used to save the men trapped in the sunken U.S. submarine squalus today. The waterproof hatch (center) separates two compartments. The rescue chamber fits over the submarine hatch and can bring up eight men at a time.
