--- English translation --- The reasons that lie behind me settling to London in 2014 are woven in the intricate tapestry of every human’s personal needs, ideas and expectations. Some are easy to disclose or fulfil, many aren’t. As far I remember I always wanted to leave Romania, to explore and see the world. It took me a while to really go for it, and by this, I mean to find the courage to take a step towards changing my own life and settle the scores with many of my own doubts and fears. I chose the UK out of convenience, as I had a friend that has guided me through my first steps into accommodating in this unknown and sometimes tough environment (a trait that’s not uncustomary to any big city). I needed some time to process the changes I was going through, but one thing I noticed since the very beginning was the incredible energy of this place, the extremely efficient way things were being done. I guess it takes a lot of know-how and skill to run a leviathan the size of London. Later, during my travels around Western Europe, I could see, that everywhere things followed the same course. These societies tend to protect their citizens, they instil in them respect, confidence, initiative, independence and strength. While in my country I was always exposed to the many consequences that come from the lack of resources, what I saw here was an amazing feat of social engineering. I can’t yet say to what degree immigrants have access to the freedoms that are being promoted in the West, or to what extent many of them are willing or able to embrace them, I can only praise this way of thinking, which although not irreproachable has its results. Then, there was the sense of community, the way people tend to protect and respect their fellow citizens (no matter the race, the religious views or the sexual orientation), with the awareness that by helping each other we all have a better and brighter future together. One can only say that with all its faults, by being the way it is, this society has a real chance of holding out through whatever tomorrow brings. This is what I would classify as the most important experiences I had so far. As for the little things, in what I’m concerned, if I can find whatever book I need to quench my curiosity, and all the artworks museums can muster, I am happy, at least for the time being. In many ways, now that I managed to achieve a certain degree of personal comfort, I feel at home in old London, even though I sometimes miss the beautiful Northern Transylvanian landscape with all its hills and mountains, its slithering silvery rivers and baroque church towers, its kind village folk and their simple lives. But then, I always have my mobile phone at hand, to check the status of things and talk to my loved ones at home. I guess that when you are away in a foreign country for such a long time, you need to learn to detach from many anchors and push forward to accomplish your own goals. --- This story was contributed by the Octavian Goga Cluj County Library.
