Gardner, Alexander, 1821-1882 · September 1862
From "War Memories" catalog: The assault and capture of this bridge, September 17, 1862, cost the Union army the lives of many of its gallant men. The history of the fight at this point is well worth reading. It will give some idea of what sacrifices were made that this "Government of the people, for the people, and by the people, should not perish from off the face of the earth."
