Election of 1856. James Buchanan, Democrat, carries off the price a pot of "Union Soup" while his opponents' spoons in hand fail to reach it. John C. Fremont trips over the rock of disunion. His Republican party was for Free Soil whereas the Democrats voted for popular sovereignty. The third figure, ex-President Millard Fillmore wears a blindfold and carries a lantern marked K.N., i.e., Know-nothing.
