Big Spring Logging Drive in Maine -- These scenes were taken during a logging drive down the 60-mile Machias river in Maine. 1 -- Daredevil French-Canadian loggers ride a scow down the rapids of Carrick Pitch. The pitch was named after Tom Carrick, a logger killed freeing a jam many years ago. 2 -- Several million feet of logs in one of several storage basins at Whitneyville. The flags are stored in water to keep worms out. 3 -- The butt of a log is hurled skyward as dynamite is used to break a log jam on the Machias river. 4 -- "River drivers" take time for their "second lunch." The loggers eat two big meals at 10 A.M. and 2 P.M. not counting their usual breakfast and supper and they don't worry about calories.
