Atmosphere's "Jet Steam" This was the path of the "Jet Stream," a narrow whooshing wind, across the United States on Nov. 22, 1950, clipping along at 150 miles an hour over the eastern section. Three days later storms swept 22 states from the middle west to the Atlantic Seaboard, from Main to Maryland in width. High Winds, rain, snow, and blizzards caused $400,000,000 damage and 278 deaths. "Jet Streams" ride six to ten miles above the earth, toward the top of the atmospheric envelope, always moving from west to east.
