Bellows, George, 1882-1925 · 1923
In a New York ring. (Bellows) / This theme was developed twice in the series of sixteen fight lithographs. The artist's own description of the earlier of the two prints, "Between Rounds, Large, First Stone" (M. 25), aptly describes the scene: "Recuperating a boxer during the minute rest. The water bottle, fan, towels and advice." (GB) The same fighters, managers, and crowds appeared in the earlier version. The 1923 rendition is smaller and although almost identical in subject matter, is a more finished and technically superior work. (Mason)
