Beautiful But Dangerous. Ocean Disaster Prevention has long been a job of the Coast Guard. Since the Titanic rammed an iceberg and sank in the icy waters of the North Atlantic, the Coast Guard has been charged with preventing similar occurrences. By combining aircraft and ships on the International Ice Patrol each spring and early summer, the Service has been able to chart the movement of icebergs and warn all ships as to their position and direction of movement, enabling them to steer clear. Not since the Coast Guard established the International Ice Patrol, has a single ship been lost as the Titanic was.
