Artificial Heart Put in Place--An artificial heart, backed by a $4.5 million research project, designed to do part or all of the work of a human heart until the patient's heart is repaired and recovers sufficiently to function on its own, is implanted in the chest of Marcel L. DeRudder at Methodist Hospital in Houston, Tex., today. Dr. Michael DeBakey, noted heart surgeon, and a team of specialist performed the surgery on the 65-year-old Westville, Ill., patient.
