Heart Surgeons Dr. Christian Barnard (left) was the first surgeon to transfer a living human heart, on December 3, 1967, in Capetown, South Africa. But for 10 years before, surgeons had been working out the technique by transplanting dog hearts: the pioneers included Dr. Norman E. Shumway of Stanford University (center) and Dr. Adrian Kantrowitz of Maimonides Hospital, New York (right).
