A scene inspired by a passage in "Germinie Lacerteux", written by Ed. and J. de Concourt. In a ballroom, under a chandelier of four interlocking gas lamps, couples dance. The orchestra is seen in the background on a platform on the right, and, in the middle, guests are seated around tables. On the left, next to a policeman seen from behind, men and women walk. In the foreground, two thugs in cap and round hat, sit and lean on a wooden balustrade, and watch a couple dance.
