On the right a building of which one side is strongly lighted, the rest in deep shadow. A horse and cart stand on the road where the prison ends, while a second horse, carrying a rider, stands out against the horizon. There are low hills in the distance, and water below them ; both are light, but the foreground is deeply shaded. The hills are in Arran, seen across the Firth of Clyde.
