The actual operation 12/2 at University Hospital in which Donald Kaminski, 38, of Alpena, Mich., received a new heart is shown in this photograph released by the hospital. Kaminski's own heart is held by surgeon as it is lifted from the chest cavity. Tubes lead to a large cabinet-size "artificial heart" which kept Kaminski alive until the new heart was shocked into life.
