47-year-old Haskell Karp of Skokie, Ill., shown before operation, was the first person to ever receive a total replacement of a human heart by a mechanical device 4/4 at Houston. The device, known as an Orthopedic Cardiac Prosthesis, employed today, was worked out by Dr. Denton A. Cooley and Dr. Domingo Liotta during the past four months. It is a modification of a model developed by Dr. Liotta in 1959 while in his native country of Argentina.
