Backstops Of Past And Present Compare Throwing Hands. Chicago, Ill. - Charles Leo "Gabby" Hartnett (right), venerable catcher and manager of the Chicago Guns, is pictured before a game here recently with Ray Schalk. Old-time catcher of the Chicago White Sox, whose record of 1726 games caught Gabby hopes to break sometime next month. Schalk, who ended his playing days in 1929, attributed the difference to the type of balls he had to receive that are longer in use in baseball.
