Gavarni, Paul, 1804-1866 · March 4, 1835–September 1841
In a public place, at left, a man in profile to the right, clothed in a robe of a pilgrim, frightens and puts to flight a menacing crowd of lower class people, by showing them a piece of cloth, supposed relic, which they believe has struck dead one of their number. The latter's body is stretched out at the feet of the pilgrim.
