Désapointement

At left, before a bed whose curtains are drawn, a man in nightshirt -- bare knees, wearing bedroom slippers, in profile to the right, holding a pistol in each hand -- looks at a young woman seated in an armchair. On her knees is an open book, in which one reads, "Le merite des femmes." She pretends to sleep and hides a man's hat under her chair, the owner of which cowers under the bed at right.
