At the door of a public ball, a longshoreman almost facing front, places himself in front of another longshoreman in order to prevent him from chastising a young lady, seen from the back in the background at left and costumed in the same way. This one turns around and "thumbs her nose." She is followed by a third longshoreman who reprimands her. Above the heads of these two, a lamp on which one reads: "Bal."
