A half-length portrait of a man of middle age, with round face and side whiskers. He wears a wide-awake hat and a large cape. He is seated in a chair, merely suggested, in front of a low-paneled partition ornamented with a small balustrade. He faces slightly to the right while looking toward the front. In the left lower corner, "Whistler, 1860."
