Detail from The Muses of Inspiration Hail the Spirit, The Messenger of Light, the 16'x50' panel running along the Bates Hall entrance wall. The detail depicts three of the right-side muses against a backdrop of sea and sky. The figures and perspective were rendered in a particularly "flat" manner so as to remain faithful to classical fresco painting, in which the rendering was meant to retain its identity as the surface of a wall.

Home Runs Kept the American League leaders still at the head of the parade. At the left in the Traveler staff photo (by Russ Adams), are the three Indians who hit the homers that enabled Cleveland to beat the Red Sox, 3-1, last night at Fenway Park. Left to right, they are: Ralph Kiner, Al Rosen and Al Smith. At right in the AP Photo, is Joe Collins, New York Yankees first baseman, who hit two homers to account for four runs in yesterday's Yankee 5-4 victory over Chicago. Thus the Yankees remained within half a game of first-place Cleveland.
