
Friedman, Elsie T. · 1887–1895
This scrapbook comprises and important collection of theater, opera and some concert programs from the years 1887-1895. The album is made up of approximately 85 pages with fromfour to six progams pasted on each page for a total of approximately 400-500 programs. The hadbound cover entitled Scrap Book is elaborately embossed and highlighted in silver, yellow and red, and is in overall good condition. An inscription on the inside cover indicates the album belonged to Elsie T. Friedman. In addition to performances in Boston, the collection reflects travels to New York, London, Paris and Munich. Prominent actors and actrresses featured include Edwin Booth, Sarah Bernhardt and Elanor Duse. Performances include the plays of Shakespeare, Sheridan, Pinero; light operas by Gilbert and Sullivan; adaptations of liberary works such as Vanity Fair. Apart from the historical record of theater and other arts presentations of the period, the collecdtion is of interest for type design and layout, and, in some cases, accompanying illustrations of the programs. Programs include graduation ceremonies of the Prince School, Boston and Boston Girls' High School from 1887 and 1890, including Emily T. Friedman as a graduate.
