Holmes was born and grew up in the “gambrel-roofed house,” facing Cambridge Common, where the Littauer building now stands. In 1870, he and his brother sold the house to Harvard University and in—to use Holmes’ words—“a case of justifiable domicide,” it was demolished in 1883. Watercolor of the Holmes House in Cambridge
